Hands-on with Collaborative Painting
with with Jay F. Coleman

In conjunction with the exhibition Rik Freeman: Wade in the Waters, join us for a hands-on workshop led by Jay F. Coleman where participants are invited to create a large-scale “river” with contributions of painted figures, abstract water textures, or symbols. Explore art as a form of resistance and renewal while working on a collective artwork using watercolor washes, acrylic texture, tissue paper for depth, and pastel for highlights.
No experience necessary. All materials provided.

About Jay F. Coleman
Jay F. Coleman is an artist based in Washington, DC, whose murals and sculptures amplify community narratives and celebrate cultural history. Drawing on collaborative research and on-site engagement, Coleman translates local stories into dynamic visual works that activate schools, civic buildings, and neighborhood corridors. His practice blends fine art, design, and arts education, prioritizing partnerships with youth and educators to build projects that are both visually compelling and deeply rooted in place. Across media—murals, sculpture, and portraiture—he uses gesture, color, and symbolic motifs to honor resilience, learning, and collective joy. Coleman’s community-first approach positions art as infrastructure: a catalyst for dialogue, pride, and belonging.
