Local artist Helen Zughaib has many stories to tell about her journey from Lebanon to America and the ongoing migrations of people seeking a better life. In this workshop, you will learn how Helen’s artistic choices were inspired by meeting Jacob Lawrence and seeing how he uses color, line, and shape to tell stories of “struggle and triumph.” Through her art, Helen intends “to create empathy, give voice to the voiceless, heal, and reflect on our shared humanity.” You and your family will look carefully at Helen Zughaib’s and Jacob Lawrence’s narrative series, discuss what you see, and find inspiration for your own works of art. With Helen as your guide, you will experiment with color, line, and shape to tell a story in paint—your story. Participants will have a chance to view Jacob Lawrence’s The Migration Series and The American Struggle in the galleries.
