Acclaimed art historian Richard J. Powell discusses his new book, Colorstruck! Painting, Pigment, Affect, a vibrant and provocative exploration of how Black artists have used color to create meaning, evoke memory, and imagine freedom. Drawing on works in The Phillips Collection by artists including Jacob Lawrence, Alma Thomas, and Sam Gilliam, Powell considers the powerful intersections of color, race, history, and visual experience.

Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Distinguished Professor of Art and Art History at Duke University. His many books include Going There: Black Visual Satire, Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture, and Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson.
