Nikolaj Hess playing the piano

Internationally acclaimed Danish pianist and composer Nikolaj Hess brings his dynamic trio to Phillips Music in a program that complements Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea. Shaped by Nordic Cool, American jazz roots, global rhythmic influences, and classical sound worlds, Hess’s work often explores the translation of visual art into improvised and composed music. To reflect the museum’s 2026-27 theme of relationships and creative exchange, this program draws inspiration from selected works in The Phillips Collection, especially the paintings of Mark Rothko, which have been central to Hess’s artistic research.

This performance is generously sponsored by the Galena-Yorktown Foundation.

Presented in partnership with the Embassy of Denmark, Washington, DC.
