Using Art as a Tool for Cross-Disciplinary Narrative
In this 15-hour online course, educators will explore how visual art can serve as a powerful tool for storytelling across disciplines. Through close looking, discussion, and hands-on artmaking, participants will examine how artists make choices about what stories to tell, how to tell them, and whose perspectives to center.
Educators will engage with a range of artworks from The Phillips Collection and build connections to their own students and classrooms. They will leave with a mixed-media artwork created across the five sessions as well as a toolkit of ready-to-use arts-integrated activities.

This course meets weekly on Wednesdays from 5-7 pm EST on:

- November 4
- November 18
- December 2
- December 9
Please note: there will be no sessions on November 11 or November 25.
The 15-hour course comprises of:
- 10 hours of synchronous workshops on Zoom; each 2-hour session will include:
- Slow looking at works of art
- Class and small group discussions
- Artmaking & other interactive activities
- 5 hours of independent work time (approximately 1 hour per week) will include:
- Follow-up assignments connected to class content
- Continuing to work on art projects started during the class sessions
- Practicing an engagement strategy in your classroom
- Completing a short post-course survey
All course supplies will be provided free of charge.
This workshop is open to educators who teach all subject areas and grades 3-12.
- Participants can elect to receive professional development:
- Washington, DC: 15 PLU
- Virginia: 15 points for Professional Development activities (needs pre-approval from your evaluator/supervisor)
- Maryland: 1 CPD Credit
- Credit for other states is available on a case-by-case basis.
- Participants can elect to receive graduate-level credit through Trinity Washington University, to support teacher recertification, salary advancement, and continued professional growth, at a cost of $125. Please see more information on the registration form.
- You may choose to take the course not-for-credit.
The Phillips Collection and University of Maryland partner to offer professional development courses for PK-12 educators. The courses provide opportunities to integrate the visual arts seamlessly into the core curriculum, using The Phillips Collection’s Prism.K12 arts integration strategies and resources. Educators will expand their understanding of and skills in arts integration by planning, practicing, and implementing arts-integrated lessons in their classroom. Through online engagement and hands-on practice with students, the courses are delivered through virtual or in-person learning in collaboration with the University of Maryland and The Phillips Collection.
