Hands-on with Textile Doll-Making

In conjunction with the exhibition Rik Freeman: Wade in the Waters, join us for a hands-on workshop led by Sherri Lumpkin where participants are invited to create water-inspired dolls using upcycled materials, fabric, shells, and beads. Explore the artist’s practice through learning how to use textiles and adornments to symbolize the ocean, rivers, and the deep mysteries beneath.
No experience necessary. All materials provided.

About Sherri Roberts Lumpkin
Sherri Roberts Lumpkin is the founder and director of The Ragbaby Exchange, a creative healing initiative that uses doll-making, affirmation kits, and mindfulness tools to promote self-esteem and emotional well-being in women and children. She supports high-achieving women facing burnout, empowers teen girls, and helps young children discover their inner strength through art. An award-winning graphic designer and playwright, Sherri is the 2024 Artist-in-Residence at the University of Minnesota in Havana, Cuba, and a 2024 Environmental Justice Artivist Fellow with Social Art and Culture and the Aspen Institute. Her essay “The Corrective and Healing Nature of Black Dolls’ appears in the 2025 Contours ArteCalle Journal. She currently serves as Ms. Maryland Senior America 2024–-25.
