Summer Institute for Teachers: Arts and Belonging
Integrating Art into Classroom Curricula with The Phillips Collection & University of Maryland
Explore how the arts can be a catalyst to build belonging in your classroom in this summer’s week-long teacher institute. Inspired by the Phillips’s summer exhibitions, Vivian Browne: My Kind of Protest and Essex Hemphill: Take care of your blessings, we will investigate our own identities while considering how engagement with the arts can lead to deeper connections with and empathy for our students, colleagues, and communities. Educators will use various art forms, including visual art, movement/dance, theater, and creative writing, to cultivate a community of learners and plan lesson ideas for the year ahead.

The course meets daily on Monday, July 14-Friday, July 18, from 10:15 am-1 pm, at The Phillips Collection (1600 21st St NW, Washington, DC, 20009).
All course supplies will be provided. The 15-hour course includes:
- 14 hours of in-person instructional workshops at The Phillips Collection: Looking closely at artwork in the galleries; engaging with multiple art forms—including visual art, movement/dance, theater, and creative writing; learning about social-emotional & culturally-responsive teaching strategies; and hands-on workshops.
- 1 hour of independent work time: Reading journal articles and completing pre- and post-course surveys.
This workshop is applicable and open to educators who teach all subject areas and grade levels.
- Participants can elect to receive professional development:
- Maryland: 1 CPD credit
- Washington, DC: 15 PLU
- Virginia: 15 points for Professional Development activities (needs pre-approval from your evaluator/supervisor)
- Credit for other states is available on a case-by-case basis.
- You may choose to take the course not-for-credit.
The Phillips Collection and University of Maryland partner to offer professional development courses for PK-12 educators. The courses provide opportunities to integrate the visual arts seamlessly into the core curriculum, using The Phillips Collection’s Prism.K12 arts integration strategies and resources. Educators will expand their understanding of and skills in arts integration by planning, practicing, and implementing arts-integrated lessons in their classroom. Through online engagement and hands-on practice with students, the courses are delivered through virtual or in-person learning in collaboration with the University of Maryland and The Phillips Collection.
