The Phillips Plays with Books
Back to School

Bring your family to celebrate books and art! Join a 15-minute Spotlight Talk in the galleries. Drop by the art workshop where a museum educator and teaching artist will help families make artists’ books inspired by works of art from the museum’s collection.
The workshop will offer a variety of book-related, art-making options—choose one or all!
- Make an 8-page book from one piece of paper, perfect for a very short story (perhaps 6 words!) inspired by one work of art.
- Fold an accordion book, glue a reproduction of an artwork on a page, and continue the story. What might happen next?
- Design a book structure of your own. Tell a story with line, shape, and color. Illustrate your book with paint, hand-made stamps, and collage.
- Compose “black-out poetry.” On a page from a recycled book, find words for a poem. With a Sharpie, black out the words you are eliminating, revealing the found poem.
