In 1958, Christenberry first photographed Hale County, Alabama, with a box Brownie found in a chest of drawers at his parents’ home. For Christenberry, his early photographs brought “the outside world into the studio.” He mainly used them to reference color and subject matter in later paintings. Christenberry began exhibiting his small-format photographs in 1971.
