Entrance hall, February 1932
Duncan Phillips often curated small-scale installations in the entrance hall to his home turned museum. In February of 1932, he adorned this limited space with three works by Gifford Beal: Stone Cutter, an undated drawing; Horses and Carts, Bermuda, a watercolor from 1919; and the undated Polka from Die Fledermaus, a painting that Phillips believed to be one of Beal’s best works. Delighted with this arrangement, Phillips wrote to Beal on February 5 to tell him that it “look[s] splendidly.”
