He joined a workshop run by Charles Alston, an artist and student
in art education at Columbia University's Teachers College. Alston
became Jacob's teacher and his mentor, first at Utopia House and
later at the Harlem Art Workshop, sponsored by the Work Progress
Administration as one of many New Deal programs of the 1930s. |
