But that changed in
1941, when Edith Halpert, a leading art dealer, featured the
sixty paintings in her Downtown Gallerya gallery that,
like other New York venues, had displayed only the work of white
artists. With this exhibition, Jacob Lawrence crossed over the
color line, becoming the first African-American artist to gain
recognition in the larger world of American art. |
