At the urging of the artist John Graham, Duncan Phillips visited "Hotels and Cafés," the Downtown Gallery's 1930 exhibition of Davis's Paris work, and purchased Blue Café, his first painting by the artist. Within a year he had acquired three more works from the Paris period, Corner Café, 1930, and two lithographs, Place des Vosges, 1928, and Place Pasdeloup No. 2, 1929 (acc. nos. 0469, 0471-72).
