VISUAL ARTS
Canyon is an abstract combination of colors and shapes. Use several different colored tissue papers and cut them into various sizes and shapes to make your own abstract composition.
Trace a photograph of the Grand Canyon. Using pencils and colored pencils try to make a realistic tracing of the canyon. Repeat the exercise, but the second time try to make your canyon seem more abstract by using sharp angles and varying the line from thick to thin, as in Frankenthaler’s painting.
Discuss how Frankenthaler indicates “depth” in her canyon.
