Using the Program
This program provides a view of 150 years of American art as represented in The Phillips Collection. Key works are placed along a timeline according to their date of completion. To suggest context, a sampling of important events of the time accompanies corresponding images.
Images, commentary about the works of art, and biographies of the artists are accessible through the timeline and also through indexes of more than 650 works of art in the program. Artists and their works may be searched by artist name, medium, or date. The program offers an opportunity to see many examples of the work of a single artist, as the Phillips Collection is noted for its “units,” extensive holdings of works by such artists as Dove, Prendergast, Avery, Marin, and Diebenkorn.
Suggestions for teaching and learning accompany all works featured on the timeline and many other works as well. Learning activities pertain to a variety of curriculum areas: visual arts, language arts, social studies, math and science. We encourage educators to use these suggestions as starting points for classroom activities and exploration of the artists and their art.

Production of American Art at The Phillips Collection was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Major support came from The Zickler Family Foundation.
