Symposia and Conferences

Symposia

The Phillips Collection Center for the Study of Modern Art presents annual symposia on topics that are deliberately broad and often range beyond traditional aspects of art history and appreciation.

Beginning in 2009 the Center aligned its annual symposia with the International Forum weekend. This stemmed from the museum’s aim to make a “global conversation through the language of modern art” a central unifying theme of the museum’s programming and exhibitions as well as its identity and magnet for success in the 21st century. Implicit in these efforts is our embrace of a national and international role in the arts.

For more information, see the list of past symposia.

For more information on other upcoming symposia (often related to special exhibitions) check the calendar.

Conferences

The Phillips Collection Center for the Study of Modern Art holds an annual Art and Innovation Conference in collaboration with the University of Virginia. The conference brings together creative minds to explore interdisciplinary approaches to the understanding and experience of modern art, creating an intimate and profound experience of collaboration among diverse disciplines.
