The critically acclaimed Sunday Concerts at The Phillips Collection, held in the museum's wood-paneled Music Room, have been a fixture of Washington's cultural life since 1941. The concerts have long been a showcase for emerging musical talent from around the world. Such well known performing artists as Glenn Gould, Jessye Norman, Carmen Balthrop, and Emmanuel Ax all had important early performances at the Phillips.
In recent years, the Phillips has commissioned several original musical works for the Sunday Concerts by such rising composers as Jeffrey Mumford, Haskell Small, Bright Sheng, and Deidre Gribbin.
Sunday Concerts are held from October through May. They begin promptly at 4 pm. Concerts are not ticketed and seating is unreserved, so early arrival is recommended. The concerts are included in the price of museum admission on that day.
