Artist Biographies
Baritone Ryan de Ryke’s versatility and unique musical presence have made him increasingly sought after on both sides of the Atlantic. He has performed at many of the leading international music festivals including the Aldeburgh Festival, Great Britain, and the festival at Aix-en-Provence, France. In addition to his recital career, Mr. De Ryke appears regularly as a soloist in many oratorios, including Handel’s Messiah, the Passions by Bach and by Schütz, Bach’s Weinachts-Oratorio, B-minor Mass, Magnificat, and solo cantata “Ich habe genug.” He has worked with many early music ensembles, including the Orchestra of the 17th Century, the Baltimore Handel Choir, the Bach Sinfonia, the Ciciliana Quartet, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and the American Opera Theater. Mr. De Ryke’s operatic roles include the title roles in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Blow’s Venus and Adonis, and Giove in Cavalli’s La Calisto. He has also performed the role of Nardo in Mozart's La finta giardiniera with the Bay Area Summer Opera in San Francisco, and the role of Oberon in Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
At home in romantic and contemporary repertoire, Mr. De Ryke regularly performs works like Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death, Vaughan William’s Five Mystical Songs, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, and Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light. He made his Weill Recital Hall debut as a finalist with the New York Oratorio Society, and later returned to the Zankel Hall as a finalist in the Marilyn Horne Masterclass Competition.
Mr. De Ryke studied with John Shirley-Quirk at the Peabody Conservatory, with Ian Partridge at the Royal Academy of Music, and with Georges Backes at the National Conservatory of Luxembourg. He is also an Alumnus of the Britten-Pears Institute in Great Britain and of the Schubert Institute in Austria, where Elly Ameling, Wolfgang Holzmair, Julius Drake, and Rudolf Jansen, and Helmut Deutsch were among the great artists with whom he worked. Mr. De Ryke feels fortunate to collaborate regularly with artists and friends including Daniel Schlosberg, Eva Menglekoch, Michael Shepard, and Roger Vignoles.
Daniel Schlosberg’s performances have been praised for their intellect, passion, and expertise, and he is regarded as a model accompanist. In recent seasons, he has given solo and chamber music recitals at Bargemusic (Brooklyn), Austrian Cultural Forum (NYC), Sundays Live (Los Angeles), Dame Myra Hess Series (Chicago), and at the embassies of Romania, Israel, Austria and Germany in Washington, D.C. Mr. Schlosberg studied at the Peabody Conservatory with Ann Schein, at Stony Brook University with Gilbert Kalish, at the Britten Pears Institute (Aldebugh) and at the Franz Schubert Institut (Baden) He is currently Artist-in-Residence at the University of Notre Dame.
