The Princeton University Art Museum
Princeton, New Jersey
Program: Frances Lange Public Schools Program, Partners: Mott Elementary School, Monument Elementary School
The Project
Each year the Frances Lange Public Schools Program at the Princeton University Art Museum works with four second- and third-grade classes from the Trenton Public Schools. Museum docents work in partnership with the schools’ art teachers. The students visit the museum eight times throughout the year for gallery lessons intended to hone observational and analytical skills. Students make connections to other cultures and traditions through object-based learning. Back in the classroom, students keep journals and create their own works of art inspired by their museum visits. Teachers have consistently given the program high marks for its relevance to their curriculum and its personal impact on students. The program culminates with an exhibition of student work at the Trenton Board of Education. Students created this piece in conjunction with their study of Native American culture.
