Parrish Art Museum
Southampton, New York
Program: Selections from Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Art History Sketchbooks, Partner: Southampton Intermediate School
The Project
The Parrish Art Museum and Southampton Intermediate School partner on a program for fifth- and sixth-grade public school students blending art-making traditions and social studies curriculum. The lessons, projects, and museum visits enhance students’ understanding of world cultures and reveal parallels between the role of art in their community today and in other cultures and time periods. The program includes 15 sessions with a teaching artist, both in the classroom and at the museum, in which students develop observational, reasoning, and language skills, and the capacity to interpret works of art in a cultural context. These works are from the fifth-grade program on the Americas and the sixth-grade program on ancient cultures.
