Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
Montgomery, Alabama
Program: ARTWORKS Corridor Exhibitions, Partner: Public and private schools and community organizations in Montgomery, AL
The Project
Since 1990, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts has featured student exhibitions in the ARTWORKS Corridor, prominently located at the museum’s entrance. These exhibitions link the museum’s special exhibitions with K-12 education, sending a message to the community that the museum values the creative expressions of students. The museum encourages local teachers to develop lesson plans revolving around the special exhibitions so that the student and special exhibition themes coincide. Through their teachers, students become engaged with the exhibitions and create their own artistic responses. A committee of curators and professional artists selects the student work for the ARTWORKS Corridor, and the museum purchases artwork from many of the exhibitions. The works seen here are from the museum’s permanent student art collection.
