The Project

The Pre-College Portfolio Development Program at the Flint Institute of Arts is a three-year program that furthers the career pursuits of gifted high school visual arts students from Flint area public schools. Scholarship assistance ensures that the program remains merit-based and inclusive. The program aims to enhance students’ visual arts abilities through specialized curriculum, while developing leadership skills and self-esteem. Advanced instruction includes studio coursework emphasizing the fundamentals of art and design, such as observational drawing and color theory. Students also engage in writing and research exercises to enhance literacy and professional vocabulary. By the end of the program, students produce a well-rounded visual arts portfolio and artist statement intended for college applications, scholarships, and internships. These works are from the students’ portfolios.
