MS 250 West Side Collaborative Middle School
New York, New York
Erin Fitzgerald, Emily Koch, and Kathleen Aghalarpour, 7th grade
Teachers from the West Side Collaborative Middle School collaborated with educators from the Whitney Museum to design and implement an arts-integrated curriculum for 6th–8th grade students.
For their final projects students created art, reflecting their thoughts and feelings about a person, place, or event in their lives. With a focus on personal expression in a media of their choice, many students created artworks that depart from O’Keeffe’s visual language but remain true to her example of following one’s own path. Students wrote statements to accompany their abstractions.
