Mark Babino, teacher, 2nd grade
Second grade teacher Mark Babino developed a lesson based on The Migration Series for his students at Brewer Elementary School that explored the themes of racism, discrimination and segregation in The Migration Series and its relevance to students’ lives today. The students analyzed and discussed Panel No. 49 of The Migration Series, “They found discrimination in the North. It was a different kind,” which depicts a scene of segregation. Students were asked to reflect on the emotional impact of discrimination and segregation against African Americans. They wrote a one-page essay describing instances in their own lives when they felt attacked, teased or misunderstood. These writings were then the springboard for student artwork that further explored the emotional effect of being “divided”.
