The Project

Trent Lamphier and Christina Shelton incorporated ideas from The Migration Series into their “American History from 1865 to the Present” class for 10th and 11th grade students. Their students studied primary sources from The Jacob Lawrence and The Migration Series Teaching Kit to more effectively understand, discuss and analyze the causes and effects of the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance. Students made facsimiles of primary sources such as journal entries, political cartoons, newspaper articles, and letters home. Student teams made presentations to their classmates on issues such as racism, poverty and the migrants’ journey north.
