Melissa Smith has taught young children for over 15 years. For the last several years, she has been at Peabody Early Childhood Center, first as the music and movement teacher and then as a preschool teacher. She has also taught at Brent Museum Magnet School in the District of Columbia, studied at the Smithsonian Institution's Early Enrichment Center, and participated in the Smithsonian's Discovery Box project. Melissa has also completed the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative Summer Institute, which focuses on promoting methods and practice of effective arts integration.
Melissa earned her bachelor's degree at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, and wrote a senior thesis about curriculum developed for children with language disabilities. She earned a master's degree in early childhood special education from Johns Hopkins University. Melissa is dedicated to the use of the arts to teach young children, building on children's natural curiosity about their world to engage them in experiences that develop their language, social, and emotional growth and enjoyment of the arts.
