Interactive Features

The Phillips Collection offers three interactive features based on and inspired by the museum's extraordinary collection of modern art.

Jacob Lawrence: The Migration Series offers visitors a dynamic, in-depth look at The Migration Series, an epic series of paintings by the important African American artist Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). Users can listen to Lawrence read his original captions and explore his artistic process and sources of inspiration. Images, text, and music convey the journey of African American migrants from the rural South to the urban North. Other features include an online children's art gallery inspired by the series, an opportunity for visitors to share their stories of migration and read those of others, and games exploring color, shape, and sound. The program provides classroom connections for teachers through worksheets, a bibliography, and a searchable database organized by curricula area and subject.

Jacob Lawrence: Over the Line
surveys Lawrence's life and his long and fascinating career. Based on a major retrospective exhibition organized by The Phillips Collection, the program emphasizes Lawrence’s student years and development as an artist, telling of his coming to live in Harlem and his resolution to make a life in art. Through Lawrence’s paintings and archival photographs, we follow his progress from his breakthrough exhibition into the segregated art world of New York through the decades beyond. Teaching resources include suggested activities and questions keyed to curriculum areas such as language arts, social studies, math, and art. A separate section contains collages made in a model project by students in Washington, D.C., elementary schools.

American Art at The Phillips Collection showcases more than 650 works of art spanning 150 years. The program includes an interactive timeline, opportunities to see many works by a single artist, and a dynamic index, which can be searched by artist, medium, or date. Learning activities are associated with many works of art across a variety of disciplines, from visual arts to math, science, language, and music. Teachers can find ideas and suggestions to suit their needs and lesson plans.
