The Phillips Collection is deeply committed to K-12 education and greatly values and publicly advocates for an increased role for art and museums in primary and secondary education. The museum's school programs and educational resources combine modern art with innovative pedagogy and a personalized approach. The Education Department works directly with about 1,000 teachers and 5,000 students a year and through those teachers, indirectly serves many tens of thousands of students. Online interactive resources include Jacob Lawrence's The Migration Series, Jacob Lawrence: Over the Line, and American Art at the Phillips Collection.
In addition to its K-12 resources and programs, the Phillips provides undergraduate courses through the Illinois at the Phillips program. These courses are open to enrollment by local students and members of the community. The Phillips also offers a wide range of public programs.
Teacher and student programs focus on:
• Intimate, authentic, object-based learning
• Works of art as springboards for cross-disciplinary learning
• An art-based curriculum that enhances visual literacy and higher order thinking skills, including inquiry, critical thinking skills, risk taking, and experimentation
• Advocacy for collaborative, cross-disciplinary school teaching teams and project-based learning
The Phillips is nationally recognized as a leader in developing high quality and effective teacher programs and teaching resources that integrate the visual arts into instruction about art, language arts, social studies, and other subjects to help students meet high academic standards.
School tours at the Phillips weave together multiple learning styles, National Standards of Learning, and curriculum connections. Tours may include games, pantomime, drawing, writing poetry, and music-to-art comparisons.
The Phillips also reaches out to underserved public schools in the Washington, D.C., community through Art Links to Literacy, an initiative that includes programs for elementary-school students, families, and teachers.
