Individuals, Not Isms

Individuals, Not Isms

The Phillips avoids emphasizing schools of art, or "isms," focusing instead on artists with powerful, independent visions that may or may not fit within specific schools.

In addition, a number of artists, including such diverse figures as Honoré Daumier, Georges Braque, Paul Klee, John Marin, and Marsden Hartley, are represented by "exhibition units," which are focused holdings of multiple works.

Among other distinctions, the Phillips holds the world's largest and most significant collection of works by Arthur Dove—and the largest American collection of works by Pierre Bonnard.

Today the Phillips continues to add new exhibition units of modern artists, including William Christenberry and Sean Scully, and, in recent years, some 20th-century photographers, such as Aaron Siskind and Brett Weston.
