Aix-en-Provence

A year before this photograph was taken Callahan received a $10,000 Graham Foundation Award for Advanced studies in the Fine Arts, at the time the largest grant ever given to a photographer. Callahan used his fellowship money to move with his family to Aix-en-Provence, France. There, he created many landscapes, including this photograph, as well as a series of double exposures that incorporated his wife, Eleanor. He explained: “Everything was new, the language, what I saw. I went to museums and got a different sense of time and everything changed…I just know somehow or another Europe had a tremendous influence on me.”
