Mary Ellen McCabe
Stafford Elementary School
Mary Ellen McCabe has been teaching for many years. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in elementary education, she moved to the Washington, D.C., area. When her children were young, Mary Ellen became active in the local community center and soon became the director of preschool programs, arts and crafts. Mary Ellen then taught in a Montessori program, where she taught upper elementary, and later in Prince George's County schools, where she helped design and implement an arts program in a public Montessori school. The new program provided support for the arts from preschool through eighth grade and was incorporated throughout the entire curriculum. Mary Ellen now teaches at Stafford Elementary. As a member of Phillips mentor teacher team, she and her colleagues brought the work of Paul Klee alive for Stafford's entire school community. Mary Ellen believes Stafford's year of studying Paul Klee impacted students' view of art, history, their writing, and their desire to do research.
