Charlie Powers


Cellist Staff Sergeant Charlie Powers joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Chamber Orchestra in September 2005. SSgt Powers began his musical training on cello at age 3. After graduating in 1995 from Bellarmine Preparatory High School in Tacoma, Washington, he attended the New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston where in 2001 he earned a bachelor’s degree in music with Distinction in Performance. While at NEC, he studied with Colin Carr and David Wells and pursued master’s level studies with Natasha Brofsky.

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” SSgt Powers performed with the Boston Philharmonic and was a Tanglewood Fellowship recipient in 2005 from Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Mass. He received the Karl Zeise Memorial Cello Award for the 2005 Tanglewood season and served as principal of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra under James Levine.
