VISUAL ARTS
Sheeler and other artists developed a style of painting called precisionism. Think about the word and the image to determine the meaning of this term. Then look it up in a dictionary or art glossary. What does the word precision or precise mean?
Precisionist artists used forms of the twentieth century machine age and reduced them to simple geometric shapes. Make a list of the geometric shapes you see in this picture.
Sheeler was also a photographer. He based this painting on a photograph that he took. What do you see that could hint that the work was based on a photograph?
Do you see any people in this painting? What effect does this have?
LANGUAGE ARTS
How do you think the artist felt about cities? How does Skyscrapers make you feel? Write a calligramme (a text in a particular shape, like a skyscraper in this case) about the way this view makes you feel.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Sheeler saw the skyscraper as a symbol of New York City. Examine the history of the skyscraper in New York. When did they become popular structures? What other cities are famous for their skyscrapers?
SCIENCE
Skyscrapers would not have been possible without two important inventions: the elevator and steel beams. How do you think these inventions made skyscrapers possible? Why are materials so important in building?
