VISUAL ARTS
How do you think you would feel if you lived in this bustling city? What in the painting makes you say that? How do you feel about the city or town you live in? Create a watercolor of your town or neighborhood to show your feelings toward your community.
How does the artist create depth in this painting? He uses something called one point perspective. What does this term mean? What kind of shape does this perspective create?
LANGUAGE ARTS
Marin wrote a poem about his experiences of New York’s energy and how these sensations became art: “They—the drawings—were mostly made in a series of wanderings around my City—New York –with pencil and paper in—sort of—short hand—writings as it were…” Using this as inspiration, take a walk around your neighborhood and take notes. Afterwards, write a poem or create a painting using your notes as a reference.
SOCIAL STUDIES
New York City was outfitted with electric street lamps in 1880. Have students research the history of electric streetlights. What are the pros and cons of these technological advances? What are some examples of new technology in today’s society? Think about cell phones, the Internet, Ipods etc. Have these technologies changed the way we live? How?
Bryant Square still exists in New York City today. On the Internet, research Bryant Square. Where is it on a map? What does it look like today?
MATH
