Design a band uniform. Use pastels or crayons to color the uniforms. What colors would you use? (Remember bright colors can be seen from far away.)
Why did the Blue Devils decide to wear blue uniforms? What feelings are expressed through the color blue? How would the mood of the painting change if the band members were wearing red, yellow, or green uniforms?
LANGUAGE ARTS
Attend the next parade in your town. Write a news article about the event using the leading questions who, what, where, where, when, and how.
Imagine you are organizing a parade. Write an essay and describe what groups you would invite to perform, as well as what uniforms you and your friends would wear.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Blue Devils takes place in New York City during World War I. Notice the many different flags. Identify what countries the different flags come from.
Research the Blue Devils and why they are carrying the French flag.
Research parades your own community or town. How many parades are conducted in your town each year? What groups organize these parades? What do they celebrate?
SCIENCE
Determine the source of light in Blue Devils on Fifth Avenue. Could it be the sun? What time of day is it? Discuss why there would be a parade at this time of day.
MATHEMATICS
Use timetables to calculate the number of people marching in procession (ex: 8 across and 8 rows equals 64 people marching).
