How many different colors are in this painting?
Morris Louis created paintings entirely of stripes. Look around you. Where do you see stripes?
Would the stripes have looked different if they had hard-edged lines rather than blending together? Try to paint a picture like Number 182, but with hard-edged, distinct lines.
Using complimentary colors, create a painting in which your colors overlap. Which colors make other colors? Do some of your color combinations not work (make muddy colors)?
Louis was influenced by the abstract expressionist painter, Helen Frankenthaler. Compare Louis’ Number 182 with Frankenthaler’s Canyon.
