Recall a parade that you have attended. Create a drawing or painting of the experience. Don’t forget that details are important; for example, in Parade on Hammond Street, Crite portrays distinct individuals who have various skin tones, hairstyles, and clothing styles.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Crite considers himself an “artist-reporter.” One of his goals was to show African Americans participating in everyday activities in his Boston community. Write a newspaper article about the parade, using the reporter’s questioning method: who, what, when, why, and how.
Parade on Hammond Street is an image from Crite’s Neighborhood Series, where he presented the lives of African Americans accurately and honestly. An interview is a great way to learn more about your community or someone in your neighborhood. Interview someone who has lived in your community for more than two years. You might consider talking to a family member, a teacher, a friend, a policeman or a local doctor. Before the interview prepare questions, such as “How long have you lived in your community?” “How do you feel about your community, and how has your community changed?”
SOCIAL STUDIES
Crite creates a scene of communal unity. Make a list of community events and then discuss what events foster communal unity. Keep in mind that teamwork is an important aspect of communal unity.
