Position: Graduate Internship for Programs and Lectures

Overview:

The Phillips Collection Internship program is open to full-time graduate students and recent graduates. The purpose of The Phillips Collection Internship program is to give students and recent graduates meaningful work, educational experiences and real-life practices in their area of academic study.

The Graduate Intern for Programs and Lectures will research and present gallery talks to adult and high school tour groups at The Phillips Collection. The Graduate Intern will also assist with The Phillips Collection day-to-day public programming operations and assist with programs on Thursday evenings from 5 pm to 8:30 pm. Some weekends may also be required.

Duration: Internship is available for an academic semester for at least 20 hours a week. Assisting with programming on Thursday evenings from 5:00 until 8:30 pm is mandatory. Some weekends and additional evenings are possible.  However, depending upon then needs of the department, internship length and schedule may vary.

Academic Credit: Depending on the nature of the internship and approval of the student's college or university, academic credit may be granted for internships. Student applicants should consult their academic advisor for additional information.

Spring Internship:     November 20
Summer Internship:  April 20
Fall Internship:         July 20

Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Researching and presenting gallery talks to adult and high school tour groups about special exhibitions and the permanent collection at The Phillips Collection.
  • Giving daily spotlight tours (20 minutes in length) on one work of art on view in the museum to the visiting public.
  • Conducting research.
  • Completing data entry.
  • Assisting with report-writing and other clerical assignments.
  • Preparing materials on special exhibitions and the permanent collection for docent training.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a Master’s degree program or recent completion of a Master’s degree in Art History, Museum Education or related Humanities.
  • Strong background in nineteenth and twentieth century American and European art preferred. Interest in contemporary art is ideal.
  • Excellent public speaking skills. 
  • Strong organizational and computer abilities.
