Position: Music Department Internship - Researcher

Overview:

The Phillips Collection's Internship program is open to full-time undergraduate students, full-time graduate students, and recent graduates. The purpose of The Phillips Collection Internship program is to give students and recent graduates meaningful work and educational experiences in their area of academic study. 

Hours: At least 20 hours per week is preferred, flexible weekdays. Flexible research hours, with a four hour requirement on Sundays. However, depending upon the needs of a given department, internship length and schedule may vary.

Academic Credit: Depending on the nature of the internship and approval of the student's college or university, academic credit may be granted for internships. Student applicants should consult their academic advisor for additional information.

*Application deadline dates are as follows: Seasonal Internship (mid-September 2012 - May 2013): July 30, 2012

Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

The Music Department Research Intern will assist with Sunday Concerts, the weekly classical chamber music series presented at The Phillips Collection October through May at 4 pm in the Music Room. Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Planning and researching for Sunday Concerts and Coda Sessions, the Phillips's post-concert discussions.
  • Compiling research for each concert in three stages: 1) compilation 2) summarization 3) formulation of questions based on research.
  • Coda Sessions and coordinating operation with Recording Engineer.
  • Reviewing recordings for selection of concert excerpts in coordination with IT Department for podcasts.
  • Reviewing and coordinating editing of Coda Sessions with Audio Visual Manager for podcasts.
  • Preparing recording packages for Classical WETA, and Cataluyna Radio.
  • Preparing permanent archives and delivery to library (recording and music publications).
  • Tranferring non-active music records to permanent archives.
  • Maintaining and updating Concert Schedule webpage using website editing software.
  • Proofing weekly concert programs (composers, dates and pieces), artist biographies, and other publicity materials.
  • Working with Music Assistant with concert set-up/production.
  • Corresponding with future performers/artist managers to compile publicity materials.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Director of Music Programs.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Background in Music History/Literature and Music Performance is preferred.
  • Excellent research skills and communication
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong organizational and computer abilities.
  • Ability to work well with performing artists and public audience.

Pay Rate: unpaid
