Position: Director of Development
Overview:
The Director of Development will provide leadership and will develop goals and fundraising strategies for The Phillips Collection annual fund and the Endowment Campaign. He/she will increase museum financial support through individual and corporate memberships, Trustee contributions, foundation and governmental grants, major and planned gifts, corporate sponsorship, special fund raising events, and rentals of museum facilities. The Director of Development seeks both unrestricted and restricted funds and will integrate development goals and activities with larger Campaign initiatives on an annual basis. He/she will staff the Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees and help identify and recruit Trustee prospects. He/she provides stewardship to existing Trustees and manages Trustee giving. The Director of Development helps staff the Finance/Development Committee, which provides oversight of the museum’s financial operations. The incumbent also attends meetings of and provides reports for the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. The position reports to the museum’s Director and serves as a member of the senior management team, supervising all development, membership, and special event staff.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Works with Director, Trustees, development staff, and other museum staff to establish and meet goals for museum’s annual and endowment funds.
- Works with the Director, Campaign Chairs, and development staff to plan and implement the Endowment Campaign.
- Manages the Endowment Campaign plan, Committee meetings, timeline, and budget to ensure Campaign momentum and success.
- Issues regular Campaign progress reports including results to date, recent activity, priority contacts to be made and action plans.
- Drafts Campaign proposals, recruits and cultivates Campaign volunteers, and develops Campaign materials for the Director and Campaign Chairs/volunteers in preparation of cultivation and solicitation meetings.
- Serves as a member of the Senior Management staff participating in management decisions.
- Responsible for developing strategies, plans, and timelines to achieve annual fundraising goals.
- Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
- Works directly with the Board of Trustees to achieve the Trustee annual fundraising goal.
- Provides staff leadership and coordination for the Governance Committee of the Board.
- Identifies, cultivates, and solicits Trustee prospects in conjunction with Director and Trustees.
- Prepares regular development reports and analyses for the Board, Director and staff.
- Works with Director and other museum staff to plan and implement the annual International Forum “Weekend in Washington.”
- Leads the process to identify and solicit prospects for exhibition sponsorship, education programs, the Center for the Study of Modern Art, and other museum programs and activities.
- Provides oversight and assistance for the corporate membership and sponsorship program.
- Provides oversight of the special events team and facility rental program.
- Provides leadership and manages the annual fundraising Gala including goal setting, development of strategies, recognition and benefits, and supervision of Gala volunteers and consultants.
- Oversees creation of all fundraising materials and Campaign brochures.
- Manages the museum travel program and helps to identify and plan domestic and international trips for donors on an annual basis.
- Attracts, develops and retains a competent, well-trained, properly structured and highly motivated staff capable of achieving departmental and organizational goals.
- Establishes and communicates performance standards and provides Development staff with timely, constructive feedback.
- Provides coaching and technical information to ensure a knowledgeable and skilled staff.
- Manages departmental activities and fosters collaborative efforts across the organization..
- Oversees all donor benefits and stewardship.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree and/or minimum of 10 years of development experience.
- Proven track record of achieving revenue targets of over $7 million annually.
- Experience in major gift solicitation and campaign fundraising required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
- Experience in working closely with senior managers, volunteer boards, and committees.
- The ability to work with and motivate a broad spectrum of people ranging from museum staff and volunteers, to major donors, corporate sponsors, and prospects.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, cultivate, and steward donors.
- Supervisory experience and strong management skills required.
- Ability and desire to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Must be a team player committed to developing and working within a collaborative museum environment while ensuring the highest level of customer service.
- Excellent computer skills and knowledge of database programs required, especially the Raiser’s Edge fundraising database.
- Strong interpersonal skills to include vision, patience, perseverance, tact, and diplomacy.
- Knowledge of art history preferred.
